The announcement that Channel 4 will be coming to Leeds literally lit up the city. Social media went mad. Leeds City Region’s #4Sparks campaign had prevailed, and Leeds University floodlit its iconic Parkinson Building in celebration.

Friends and neighbours with no connection to the media were talking about it as a good thing. A new wave of prosperity, jobs and creative pride was on the way.

Moreover, we had been the underdog and beaten off the challenge from the two Andies (mayors Andy Street, heading the Birmingham bid, and Andy Burnham, in Manchester).

Luther

Crime drama Luther makes a thrilling return on New Year’s Day.

Opening with protagonist DCI John Luther tied to a chair, having been tasered and tortured, the detective must quickly recover to bring a psycho-sexual killer to justice.

Take That: We’ve Come a Long Way

BBC One, 7.00pm

A one-off documentary that commemorates 30 years of one of the country’s longest-running boy bands, Take That.

Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and occasional band member Robbie Williams share their favourite moments over the years.

With glimpses of the band’s preparations for their anniversary album, the documentary will feature video messages from Take That fans and also footage of the band spending time in studio with Bee Gees legend Barry Gibb.

The Queen and I

Sky One, 6.00pm

A comedic dramatisation of the novel by Sue Townsend, The Queen and I is set in the early 1990s and imagines Britain as a republican state.

Newly-elected republican prime minister Jack Barker (David Walliams) dethrones The Queen (Samantha Bond) and removes the royals' titles and wealth.

The EastEnders star will reflect on events from the past year, including the ongoing Brexit debates in Westminster, where “there’s been more backstabbing than we have in Albert Square.”

He will also raise a toast to mark the 100th anniversary of both the women’s vote and the First World War Armistice.

Derry Girls

A coming-of-age sitcom written by Lisa McGee, Derry Girls aired back in January on Channel 4.

We take a look at some of the weirdest holiday specials, from killer snowmen to passive aggressive relatives.

Black Mirror – White Christmas

Writer Charlie Brooker sets a tranquil scene in the beginning of the Black Mirror Christmas episode, before dragging viewers along a twisted story of loneliness and ostracisation.

The one-off special will see Rinder apply his legal know-how and sharp wit to analyse the funniest moments and the biggest topics of the last year.

Rinder will also be joined by a roster of famous faces including former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, comedian Deborah Frances-White (Have I Got News for You), journalist and broadcaster Clare Balding (Wimbledon) and politician-turned-dancing star Ed Balls (Strictly Come Dancing).

Nadiya’s Asian Odyssey

Former Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain uncovers her familial connections to southeast Asia and explores the culinary arts of Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal.

In the first of a two-part series, Hussain begins her journey by visiting Cambodia and Thailand, learning about the culture of these two countries by interacting with the people and, of course, the food.
