RTS launches 2017 bursary scheme

The RTS is offering 20 bursaries to students studying accredited Television Production and Broadcast Journalism degree courses. A further five technology bursaries, aimed at encouraging some of the most talented students to consider a career in television, are available to students studying Computing and Engineering on some of the top courses at British universities.

The Shiers Trust is accepting grant applications for research projects

The Award offers grants of up to £2,000 towards projects which research and conserve the history of television.

Launched in 2000, the Shiers Trust grant is named after George Shiers, a distinguished US TV historian.

Now in its 17th year, the grant has enabled a range of projects, including the digitalisation of back issues of the Radio Times and the creation of a website which presents a collection of historical consumer electronics images.

In a digital age, how we consume content is constantly changing and it has become increasingly difficult to predict the future of content consumption.

At the recent IABM Conference in early December the topic of how under 30s consume content was discussed on a small panel chaired by John Ive, IABM’s Director of Technology & Strategic Insight.

Speakers included Sally Wainwright, creator and writer of Happy Valley; Rohit Kachroo, ITV News Security Editor; documentary filmmaker Rowan Deacon and Suzy Lamb, Head of Entertainment at Thames TV.

Channel 4 on the hunt for new northern writers

The writing scheme is open anyone who is new to television, with three successful candidates being placed within independent production companies Lime Pictures and Bonafide Films, where they will undergo mentoring to develop their writing skills.

They will also each receive bursaries of £3,000 to support their time at Lime Pictures or Bonafide Films, along with a nine-month package of training and development from staff at the production companies.

I found out about the RTS Futures Career's Fair on Twitter, and thought that even though travelling from Manchester to London for it specifically might be extreme, you never know who you'll meet at these events. I found everyone at the fair to be very friendly, and had no issues striking up conversations with other visitors; after all, we were all in the same boat.
