Event Report: London 360 six year celebration

The celebration was welcomed by MP Dawn Butler at the House of Commons, where she delivered a speech on the importance of diversity in the media and how London 360 has made an impact. 

"Diversity is strength and it is so important that people from diverse communities are given opportunities to succeed in the highly competitive media industry," said Dawn Butler.

Audrey Cairo, Senior Consultant at Searchlight Recruitment, hosted the session, opening with a question to the panel on structuring a CV, explaining that "people can look at your CV for just a few seconds."

Alex Lawrence, Founder and CCO at Clearhead Digital, said that there are three key areas he looks for on a CV, "what you've done, what you're doing and what you're going to do." 

"Factual, accurate and personal," added Sasha Breslau, Head of Acquired Series at ITV.

TriForce Creative Network announce Writers Incubator

The writers will receive access to broadcasters and commissioners to encourage new and inclusive talent, as well as one-to-one mentoring, training and seminars throughout the twelve month paid programme.

TriForce Creative Network, with Creative Skillset and the High-end TV Levy, opened submissions for The TCN Writers Incubator earlier this year to offer television writing talent the chance to further their skills with a year-long paid programme.

Meet James Longman, Broadcast Journalist

At the age of 24, James travelled to Syria to report on the early days of conflict and wrote for several UK newspapers including The Telegraph while there. 

A fluent Arabic and French speaker, Longman has worked as Beirut Correspondent for the BBC on the conflict in Syria and the Middle East and has reported on terrorist incidents across Europe, including two weeks of continuous live reporting during the terrorist attacks in Paris and Nice.

Edinburgh TV festival talent schemes open for submissions

The charitable organisation runs two training programmes each year, The Network and Ones to Watch, that help talent from a diverse range of backgrounds across the UK kick-start their careers in the TV industry.

The Network gives 60 applicants with little or no experience their first step on the TV ladder for those who want to work behind the camera.

Panel members at UTV Studios, Belfast, included: Stelify Media MD Kieran Doherty; Terry Brennan, head of news and programmes at UTV; Leon McGeown Fee, production manager on Disney teen series The Lodge; novelist Colin Bateman; and Michael Lennox, who directed the Oscar-nominated short, Boogaloo and Graham.

They recalled how they broke into the media industry and offered a wealth of invaluable advice to an audience of young people hoping to break into television. 

NFTS partners with RSPB for Natural History & Science MA

The partnership will include an RSPB scholarship, which will support a student through their two year MA, starting in the School’s new academic year in January 2018.

The two-year MA course will equip students with the skills required to direct science, natural history and wildlife productions and the knowledge to produce entire shows. 

The RSPB will work closely with tutors and students to inspire a new generation of filmmakers to create engaging content that elevates the charity's conservation cause, reaching new audiences through innovative student filmmaking. 

Waad al-Kateab named RTS Young Talent of the Year 2017

The journalist, whose incredible footage of the war-torn city of Aleppo, Syria captured hearts and minds over the past year, received the awards in front of an audience of industry-leading journalists at the awards ceremony in London.

She was also part of the team which received The Independent Award for The Last Flower Seller of Aleppo, and the News Coverage – International Award for Inside Aleppo.

No footage or photographs are available of al-Kateab (an alias she uses) out of concern for her safety.

 

Applications open for the John Schofield Trust mentoring scheme

The scheme partners senior news operators which in the past has included Channel 4’s Matt Frei and BBC broadcaster Jeremy Bowen, with journalists who are in the early stages of their career.

Now in its sixth year, the Trust is expanding its selection criteria to include those entering journalism from non-traditional routes.
