Leeds hosts RTS masterclasses with Hollyoaks production team

More than 150 students from 20 universities heard Lime Pictures’ Hollyoaks production team and a panel from Leeds-based factual indie True North give two masterclasses. Both panels stressed the importance of work experience placements as a way in to the industry.

 

True North development producer Eleanor Wight, editor Luke Rothery and Hollyoaks editor Jake Whiston were all snapped up as a result of successful placements.

“Development is anything that takes your show on a journey from a blank page of terrifying nothingness to the end of filming,” explained Andy Cadman, executive producer of ITV2’s Love Island.

 

Cadman was joined on the panel by All 4 commissioning editor Thom Gulseven and ITV2 scheduler Alex Wootten, who explained what they look for in a pitch.

 

Bumble announces new grant scheme for aspiring female filmmakers

The initiative will give five female filmmakers in the UK and Ireland a £20,000 grant to make their own short films, each focused on female empowerment, equality and kindness.

In partnership with Women in Film & TV, the five entrants will receive guidance and bespoke mentoring over the production period.

Entries now open for RTS Young Technologist Of The Year award

Aimed at engineers in the early stages of a career in broadcasting or related industries, the award celebrates a new wave of talent making its mark on the industry.

The grand prize is an all-expenses paid trip to the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) 2018 exhibition and conference in Amsterdam; the world’s leading media, entertainment and technology show.

The runner-up will receive the Coffey Award for Excellence in Technology and a technical book of their choice.

BBC Three seeks short films for British Asian summer season

British Asians are the biggest ethnic group in the UK, numbering over 3 million. Of this group the majority are young people, with around 60% of Pakistani and Bangladeshi Brits and just over 40% of Indians being under 30. The BBC is looking to represent the diverse culture of young British Asians in particular, dispelling the notion that they are a homogenous group and celebrating both the multiple countries of origin and distinct religions of the populations.

Sky launches new training scheme for female engineers

The programme will provide up to 1000 women with the necessary skills, training and career development opportunities to become an engineer. 

The UK has less women working in the field than anywhere else in Europe - only 2% of Sky's engineering workforce are women.

The company hopes to increase the number of female engineers at the company to 20% over the next two years.

Lighting is key to camera work, says cinematographer Laurie Rose. It’s essential to establishing a look or mood for a scene. “The important thing is to tell a story and create mood using light,” he explains.

Creative Skillset has launched a Film Accounts trainee scheme to help new entrants kick-start a career in film production.

The scheme is seeking individuals who are as equally passionate about numbers as they are about film.

Responding to industry demand for skilled accounts personnel, a bespoke programme has been created, in partnership with Production Guild, to provide introductory training for numerate individuals eager for a freelance career in the accounting side of filmmaking.
