Because the Night follows Nathan, a happily married man who’s well-meaning demeanour hides a terrible secret that if revealed will ruin his new life.

After spending a decade covering up his past, Nathan encounters Bob, an old face from his past, who comes to Nathan’s doorstep with shocking news that will risk exposing the skeletons in his closet.

“It’s one of my favourite stories: a tale of psychological suspense, of guilt and ghosts and murder,” said Cross.

“Our job is to make viewers want to sleep with the lights on.”

Set in 2016, Sitting in Limbo chronicles Anthony Bryan’s struggle to be recognised as a British Citizen, after he discovers there is no paperwork to support this, despite having lived in the UK since he was eight years old.

Bryan has to leave his job, and finds himself being forcibly removed from his home and detained as an illegal immigrant.

The life-shattering story has been dramatised by Anthony Bryan’s brother, Stephen S. Thompson.

The highly anticipated last instalment will return to screens later this month to conclude Poldark's journey. 

The trailer shows Ross Poldark return to Westminster to challenge the king in an attempt to save his friend, while Cornwall appears to descend into chaos. Elsewhere, George Warleggan is still grieving the loss of his wife Elizabeth and, after escaping her abusive husband and finally marrying her love Drake Carne, there's trouble ahead for Morwenna as the teaser shows her distraught as she holds onto her stomach.

The awards celebrate the best of student television talent, showcasing undergraduate and postgraduate films from 23 universities.

The films were awarded in the categories Animation, Comedy & Entertainment, Drama, Factual, News and Short Form, as well as the craft skills categories Camerawork, Editing, Production Design, Sound and Writing.

Melvyn Bragg was talking at a special live edition of The South Bank Show, featuring four of the UK’s leading TV writers – Jed Mercurio (writer and creator of hit police corruption thriller Line of Duty); Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith (black comedy anthology Inside No. 9); and Heidi Thomas (period drama Call the Midwife) – discussing their craft.

Comedy, the late, great Tony Hancock would often tell his dinner guests, was simply “frustration, misery, boredom, worry – all the things people suffer from”.

This may go some way to explaining the success of a crop of deceptively simple, single-camera comedy-dramas that have all but replaced our more traditional idea of the sitcom in the television schedules.

It’s 4pm on a Friday afternoon, a time of the week when most of us are preparing to wind down the working week. Not Gurinder Chadha, co-creator and director of ITV’s new period drama, Beecham House, otherwise known as “Downton in Delhi”.

She’s at work in a Soho edit suite, putting the finishing touches to another project, her latest movie, Blinded by the Light. The film is based on journalist and broadcaster Sarfraz Manzoor’s memoir, Greetings from Bury Park.

Overseen by Gary Davey, the current Managing Director of Sky UK, Sky Studios will build on the broadcaster’s recent run of successful drama series including Chernobyl and the RTS award-winning Save Me.

The new Europe-wide development and production capability has received backing from Sky’s new owners, Comcast, and will create new productions for outlets including Sky channels, NBC Broadcast and Cable, and Universal Pictures.

The four-part series explores the complexity of family dynamics and modern relationships, focusing on three adult siblings, Jake (Russell Tovey), Helen (Claudie Blakley) and Natalie (Lydia Leonard).

When the sibling's recently widowed mother, Vivien (Francesca Annis), declares she is in love with a new man, Mark (Stephen Rea), the family is thrown into turmoil.

Jake, Helen and Natalie's suspicions are raised, with the arrival of Mark threatening not only the large family home overlooking the Sussex coast, but also their inheritance and many happy childhood memories.
