'Show me the money, boys!': The future of the sports media landscape

The spiralling cost of sports rights, the rise of women’s football and the threat that big tech companies pose to traditional broadcasters were some of the subjects covered in a lively session on the sporting media landscape.

Kicking off the discussion, session host Ade Adepitan asked whether the cost of sports rights had peaked? “We are facing intrinsic rights value headwinds,” admitted Warner Bros. Discovery Sports executive Andrew Georgiou, not least the concerns about the impact of increasing competition.

US comedy series Shrill heads to BBC Three

The six-part series will become available on BBC iPlayer from the 15th December.

Executive produced by Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks, Shrill stars Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live) as Annie, an overweight young woman who wants to change her life, but not her body.

Changing her life won’t be easy though.

As Annie tries to start her career in journalism, she is also dealing with bad boyfriends, a sick parent and a perfectionist boss.

LEGO Batman swoops in on Channel 4’s continuity team

LEGO Batman will provide various alternative, largely self-congratulatory announcements from this evening until February 5 on Channel 4 in his very own style.

Will Arnett who voices LEGO Batman, will be making references to his own accomplishments and 'awesomeness' at any given opportunity.

The first ad will air at 4.45pm today, followed by 18 unique scripted animated intros to a variety of popular Channel 4 shows.

Hard Brexit: A turn-off for TV

Lord Mandelson, a self-confessed “heartbroken European”, set the tone of this debate. Unpicking 40 years of EU membership was complicated, to say the least. He declared: “Brexit is the most complex policy exercise mounted in peace time. Transitioning Britain out of its current merger with 27 other economies is a massive task and it is going to take many years.” 

The advice of the former Labour cabinet minister and European commissioner boiled down to this: “What you as an industry must first do is take a view on what outcome best serves your needs”.
