NFTS - Cameras, Sound and Vision Mixing for Television Production

Andy Hope, course leader for the Cameras, Sound and Vision Mixing Diplomas at the NFTS, talks about this exciting area of the television industry and what the NFTS course could do for your career. Having worked in the music and television industries for 30 years, Andy’s career has spanned roles as a Music Recording Engineer, to Producer, TV Sound Supervisor and TV Director. This session was part of the RTS Futures Careers Fair 2022.

Training: Sara Deane was a member of the Children’s Film Unit, before studying at Bournemouth Film School: “I was a clapper loader [second assistant camera] for five years and … [during that time] still shooting shorts because I knew I waned to be a director of photography. I [then studied at] the National Film and Television School and graduated about 10 years ago.”

RTS Student Masterclasses: Camerawork with Phil Mash and Geraint Warrington

Mash has worked widely on US series House Hunters International and also shot an interview with Stephen Hawking for US talk show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Warrington, who usually works in natural history on programmes such as Channel 5 series Ben Fogle: New Lives in the World, recently shot CBBC drama Wolfblood Secrets, his first outing as a drama DoP.

How to become a news camera operator

Channel 4 News cameraman Dai Baker has travelled around the world, including a ten-year stint at the broadcaster’s Washington bureau.  

He’s now based in Wales where, alongside a reporter and producer, he films and edits news packages from Wales and the West Country - although he’s always on standby to go further afield, covering the inauguration of Donald Trump in the USA and the political protests in Barcelona (see video below).

RTS Student Masterclass: Camerawork

BBC, Doctor Who, Director of Photography, cameraman, camera, camerawork, RTS, students, masterclass, drama, documentary, Mum Heroin and Me,

Television is at its core a visual medium and the cameraman exists at the very heart of it.

Tim Palmer, a cinematographer working predominantly in TV drama, and BAFTA winning documentary cameraman Steve Robinson turned the viewfinder on themselves to deliver an RTS craft skills camera masterclass.

The session was chaired by former Yorkshire Television high flier Helen Scott.
