Amazon Prime Video has announced Elle, a prequel series for Reese Witherspoon’s iconic character Elle Woods.
The 2001 film Legally Blonde followed Elle after her boyfriend Warner Huntington III, an aspiring senator, broke up with her because she wasn’t “serious” enough for that kind of world. This sparked the famous line: “So you’re breaking up with me because I’m too… blonde?!”
To prove him wrong, Elle enrols in Harvard Law School alongside him (“what, like it’s hard?”) and graduates top of the class.
The new series, Elle, will focus on the high school years that crafted Woods into the star we saw in Legally Blonde.
At the end of a wave of announcements at Amazon’s presentation ‘Upfront 2024’, Witherspoon took to the stage dressed in the signature Elle Woods pink, before performing a ‘bend and snap’ as a co-host dropped a pen.
Holding her dog, Bruiser Woods, Witherspoon announced: “Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law School, she was just a regular ‘90s high school girl. And thanks to Amazon and Hello Sunshine, all of you are going to get to know her, on Amazon Prime Video.”
The series comes from Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine, which previously collaborated with Amazon on the viral hit Daisy Jones and the Six. Witherspoon will executive produce alongside showrunner Laura Kittrell (High School).
Elle will be released in 2025, with casting and exact dates yet to be announced.
