How To Get To Heaven from Belfast will be Lisa McGee’s first project since Derry Girls ended in 2022.
Like Derry Girls, McGee’s new comedy focuses on a Northern Irish female friendship group, but this time one in their late thirties. Robyn, Saoirse and Dara have been friends since high school. Now, Robyn is a mother with three young boys and a penchant for swearing, Saoirse is a successful writer who can’t help but self-destruct, and Dara still lives in her childhood bedroom whilst caring for her elderly parent full-time.
An email sparks the most exciting but terrifying journey of their lives as they are invited to the wake of an old school friend, Greta. Once there, the three friends feel like everything is not quite as it seems, and trying to find out the truth behind the mysterious death drags them from their native Belfast, to Donegal, and across Ireland in a funny and thrilling adventure.
Lisa McGee says: “I feel so incredibly lucky to be making another show for the phenomenal Channel 4 and to be doing it with Hat Trick Productions again and the creative team behind Derry Girls, the mighty Liz Lewin and Caroline Leddy, is just a dream. I've wanted to make a comedy thriller set in Northern Ireland for SUCH a long time. I cannot wait to share these flawed funny women with everyone.”
Channel 4’s Head of Comedy Charlie Perkins, says: “This is huge. We couldn’t be prouder that Channel 4 feels like this extraordinary show’s spiritual home. Getting to know the multi hyphenated talents of Lisa, Liz, Caroline and their collaborators at Hat Trick Productions has been one of the greatest pleasures in my first year as Head of Comedy. We can’t wait to bring Lisa’s next world to life for all those who already love her work and many more to come.”
