Channel 4 has revealed first look images of its upcoming comedy programme Big Mood, starring Lydia West (It’s A Sin) and Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls, Bridgerton), with Sally Phillips also featuring.
The six-part series centres around best friends Eddie (West) and Maggie (Coughlan). Their relationship has endured a decade of highs and lows, but now, the real world is calling. Both need to consider their careers, while Maggie has to contend with the unwelcome return of bipolar disorder.
With their twenties been and gone, the pair will need to keep their wits about them to survive what comes next. As life continues to throw challenges at them, Eddie begins to doubt whether their relationship is completely healthy. What follows is an exploration of female friendship, as shaped and challenged by mental illness.
Across the series, Eddie and Maggie find themselves in all sorts of situations. Perhaps sleeping with an old history teacher will bring them closer to happiness. Maybe there’s no need to call the exterminator if there’s a functioning rat hotel in the basement.
Big Mood is directed by Rebecca Asher (Brooklyn Nine Nine, Dead to Me), with Lauren Evans (Sex Education) acting as casting director. Lotte Beasley Mestriner (The Young Offenders) executive produces, while Georgie Fallon produces.
Playwright Camilla Whitehill created and wrote the programme, which is produced by Dancing Ledge Productions, majority-owned by Fremantle.
The show is executive produced by Dancing Ledge’s Laurence Bowen (The Responder) and Chris Carey (Crossfire). The commission came from Laura Riseam, Channel 4’s commissioning editor.
Big Mood will be broadcast and made available to stream on Channel 4 in 2024.
