Morgan had originally planned for six series of the much-loved drama, but has decided that the fifth series “is the perfect time and place to stop”.

Morgan thanked Netflix and Sony for supporting his decision and described Staunton as an “astonishing talent” and a “fantastic successor”.

Staunton will be the final actor to play the Queen after predecessors Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, taking the series into the 21^st Century.

The four-part series will be the latest project from Sister shared by the broadcasters following the success of Chernobyl.

Landscapers will follow the true crime story of the seemingly innocuous couple Susan (Colman) and Christopher Edwards, who came to murder Susan’s parents and bury them in their garden in Mansfield, where they remained undiscovered for a decade.

Directed by Academy Award winner Alexander Payne (The Descendants) and written by Ed Sinclair, the black comedy series offers a playful portrayal of this unique murder case.

The new series will see Olivia Colman and Tobias Mezies take over the reins from Claire Foy and Matt Smith as The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The upcoming series will cover The Queen’s reign from 1964 up to 1977 and see the beginning of Prince Edward’s life, the marriage of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips and the celebrations of The Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

This year’s line-up of history hungry stars includes British actress and newly minted star of The Crown Olivia Colman (Broadchurch), pop icon Boy George, comedian Lee Mack, former JLS member Marvin Humes and Our Girl actor Michelle Keegan.

Olivia Colman will journey from Norfolk to India, embarking on the discovery of a diverse heritage and Lee Mack’s investigation uncovers that comedy runs in the family.

The series is a collaboration between BBC One, AMC and The Ink Factory, who previously worked together on 2016's award-winning spy drama, The Night Manager.

​​Set amidst rising tensions in the Middle East during the 1970s, the show will star Florence Pugh as a young brilliant actress named Charlie, who is preparing for her ultimate role.

Colman, best known for her roles in Broadchurch and The Night Manager, is the first star to be announced for the third series of the Netflix drama series.

The entire cast is set to be replaced for the next phase of the Queen's reign when the drama jumps ahead to 1960s Britain at the end of the second series.

She said that long-form TV drama was where the best writing now took place.  

“I’ve probably read 100 scripts in the last five or six weeks and there is no doubt that primarily the great writing is in television, it’s way better,” said Bier. 

“There are exceptions. There are a couple of good feature scripts but in general it’s much better in TV.”

Bier, the only living woman to have won an Oscar, an Emmy and a Golden Globe, was speaking at an RTS event, The Night Manager – Anatomy of a Hit.

The four-part series is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix – the largest such collaboration to date – and brings together a plethora of stars for the remake of Richard Adams’ bestselling story.

Following his role as a Stormtrooper in the most recent Star Wars film, John Boyega will join A-listers James McAvoy (X-Men), Sir Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island) and Gemma Arterton (Made in Dagenham).

Maurice (Barratt) is a children's author, while his wife Deborah (Colman) is a trombone teacher. Both are dealing with their own demons, and are quietly helpless as their marriage falls apart.
