Mathew Baynton

Mathew Baynton on Ghosts, clowning and his inner Regency era poet

If only the director could see their Narrator Three now. The snub marked the beginning of Baynton’s steady rise to Brit-com stardom, from comic turns like the innocent but inane Deano in Gavin and Stacey (2008-2010), to creating and starring in several dearly beloved sitcoms, the most recent being BBC One’s Ghosts (2019-).

Mathew Baynton and Anna Maxwell Martin to join Emma Myers in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

A mid 40s blonde woman sits at a table with one hand to her chin and a glass of white wine in front of her. She wears a checkered shirt, striped sweater vest, and has her blonde hair tied back.

A Good Girl's Guide for Murder follows Pip Fitz-Amobi (Emma Myers), a 17-year-old who has chosen a five-year-old local murder-suicide case for her final school project. As she gets further and further into the case, she discovers that the original verdict may not be correct. Working alongside the accused’s brother, Ravi Singh (Zain Iqbal), Pip will have to uncover the true events before the real killer covers their tracks.

Trailer and release date announced for Ghosts' fifth and final series

In the last series, Alison and Mike, played by Charlotte Richie (Fresh Meat) and Kiell Smith-Bynoe (Taskmaster), dealt with unsuitable birthday parties, regretted buying ‘zorbing balls’ to spice up their B&B, and saw their gatehouse burn to the ground – all while having to manage their own personal gaggle of ghosts.

Ghosts’ announcement of a final series has viewers in mourning

The cast of Ghosts stood outside Button House

Alison (Charlotte Richie) and Mike Cooper (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) moved into Button House after inheriting it from a distant relative. However, their talks of converting the mansion into a hotel upset its permanent residents, a set of ghosts who died in the house at various points in history.

A shock accident left Alison, who crucially is a living person, able to see her phantom friends; eight ghosts all vying for her attention, along with a whole cluster of plague victims living in her basement.

Ghosts to host Christmas Special at Button House on BBC One

The half hour episode will follow the friendly ghosts of Button House in their efforts to repay Alison's (Charlotte Ritchie) generosity with a Christmas present.

With Alison due to return in a matter of hours, the ghosts are in a race against the clock. Especially when her and Mike's (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) journey hits a bump in the road and they are forced to reassess their Christmas Day plans.

Meanwhile, Kitty (Lolly Adefope) gets her moment in the limelight when she gets a much-needed pep talk from a surprising source.

Ghosts to return to BBC One for a fourth series

Series four will see Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) open the gatehouse for business as a humble bed and breakfast, in the hopes of making some money without the ghosts interfering as usual.

The sitcom comes from the creators and stars of Yonderland and Bill, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, who were also the original stars of Horrible Histories.
