Early in the last decade, a tsunami in Japan devastated the factory that supplied HDCAM-SR tapes - the format used to deliver most TV programmes. As people sought an alternative, the uptake of file-based production was accelerated. An informal organisation was formed - called the Digital Production Partnership - that seized on this opportunity to hasten the move to end-to-end digital, by creating a new file-based delivery specification.

Speaking at the RTS Digital Convention 2020, Mahon recalled that in the spring when Britain was hit by the first wave of coronavirus: “Indies came to the rescue of Channel 4 and said ‘We’ll be flexible, we’ll work out how to produce in lockdown.’
“They said, ‘We have to delay this programme or we can’t make it or we’ve found a cunning way to make this programme.’”
She added: “Indies did incredible things and produced things cheaply.”
The situation in the United Kingdom has seen various different levels of infection and lockdown but nothing can compare to the ITV Granada area which covers the highly infectious North West of England with the now Covid free Isle of Man.
