Disney+ has revealed casting for upcoming London-set drama Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.

The four-part series looks at the true story of an innocent Brazilian man mistaken for a terrorist and shot dead by the Metropolitan Police on his way to work. The incident occurred weeks after the 7/7 bombings, as part of police efforts to find the suspects of a failed follow-up terrorist plot.

Edison Alcaide plays Jean Charles, Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones) appears as Ian Blair, then-commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and Russell Tovey (Years and Years) plays Brian Paddick, a Deputy Assistant Commissioner. Max Beesley (The Gentleman) plays Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman, who spearheads the investigation into the 7/7 bombings. The ‘Gold Commander’ in charge of surveilling the bombing suspects is Cressida Dick, played here by Emily Mortimer (Paddington in Peru).

Rounding out the cast is Daniel Mays (Des) as forensic investigator Cliff Todd and Laura Aikman (Gavin & Stacey) as Lana Vandenberghe, a secretary at the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Michael Mansfield, the barrister who represented the de Menezes family at an inquest into Jean Charles’s death, is played by Alex Jennings (The Crown).

“This is an incredibly important story to tell, and we’ve got a heavyweight ensemble cast in place that will help us examine the events that led to the tragic shooting of the innocent Jean Charles de Menezes,” writer and executive producer Jeff Pope said.

“He was just a commuter who was tracked for nearly an hour with surveillance failing to correctly identify him, before he was shot dead on a crowded tube train, leaving his family to try and shine a light on the critical errors that led to this devastating tragedy.”

The relatives of Jean Charles de Menezes, including his parents, are consulting on the series.

The series will be available on Disney+ in spring 2025.
