The BBC has released a trailer for new drama The Listeners, about a mysterious ringing noise that only a tiny percentage of the population can hear.
Rebecca Hall (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) stars as English teacher Claire, whose life begins to unravel when she hears ‘the hum’. Tensions rise between her and her husband Paul (Prasanna Puwanarajah, The Crown) and daughter Ashley (Mia Tharia, Phoenix Rise). Doctor after doctor is left stumped by Claire’s condition, leaving her more frustrated and confused than ever.
She’s relieved to discover one of her students, Kyle (Ollie West, The Sparrow), can also hear the ringing. The pair enter the orbit of Jo (Gayle Rankin, House of the Dragon) and Omar (Amr Waked, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen), a charismatic couple who also claim to hear the hum. Jo and Omar believe the ringing to be a gift, and that those who can hear it are the “chosen few”.
The Listeners is an adaptation of the book by the same name by Jordan Tannahill, who also penned the scripts.
The show “throws up the question of how do you prove something that is subjective or that is felt,” said Rebecca Hall. “It was very interesting to think about how people treat women's experiences or how people listen to a woman when she says she is going through something difficult and ultimately in pain. How it’s met with disbelief, minimised or shifted in some way, that's explored a lot in The Listeners.”
The Listeners airs on BBC One at 9.00pm on Tuesday 19 November, and will be available on iPlayer from 6.00am that day.
