Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall will transform Agatha Christie’s The Seven Dials Mystery for TV.
Together with Chibnall’s screenwriting, Suzanne Mackie (The Crown) will executive produce the series with Good Omens’ Chris Sussman. Chris Sweeney (The Tourist, Back to Life) will direct.
There is no word on how closely the team will adapt the book, as recent adaptions of Agatha Christie’s work have opted to update the material for modern audiences.
The original murder mystery is set in a massive stately home with a large cast of characters. When one of the guests, Wade, retires to his room, the others play a prank and put several alarm clocks by his bed, as he has a habit of sleeping in. In the morning, the guests find him dead, with one alarm clock missing – leaving only seven dials.
Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent, a young female guest, decides to take on the mystery, which leads her to dark and dangerous places like the sordid Seven Dials nightclub.
Suzanne Mackie says: “I am excited to be bringing The Seven Dials Mystery to life, and to be introducing a new generation of iconic Christie characters to the screen. It has been a joy to work with Chris Chibnall in creating this bold, authored and ambitious vision for the series.
“Together with Chris Sussman and Agatha Christie Limited and, under the masterful direction of Chris Sweeney, we are thrilled to embark on this creative journey. I could not think of a more exciting first project for Orchid Pictures, or a more perfect home for this story than Netflix.”
James Prichard of Agatha Christie Limited says: “Bundle Brent is one of my great grandmother’s raft of interesting, humorous, sharp, young female characters. To see her brought to life through the words of Chris Chibnall and this production with Orchid Pictures and Netflix is a dream come true. I think viewers will love this world that we have created, and hope for more.”
