When My Mum Your Dad was first announced back in 2023, it was billed as the middle-aged Love Island, but when it came to air, that was far from the truth.
Its contestants don’t “crack on” immediately or pull each other for chats at the firepit – they are parents with real baggage tentatively giving themselves a second chance at love.
Each of the eight parents have their children nearby to their Sussex mansion in what they call ‘the bunker’ (but in reality is a gorgeous farmhouse). The kids watch their parent’s every move through a live stream and witness every awkward moment that comes with that.
Although the singletons come and go, there’s no prize except their children’s blessings, and this makes for many more vulnerable moments and deep conversations. The emphasis is much less on ‘grafting’ and coupling up, and a lot more on reinventing who you are when you date, or rediscovering who you were.
So, whilst the show tackles real problems like the reality of loneliness, and trusting again after broken marriages, it also tackles the horror of watching your parents flirt and talk about S-E-X.
In a Q+A with ITV, host Davina McCall (Big Brother) revealed the reason she thinks My Mum Your Dad works so well: “We are the first of the new generation of midlifers because we were at illegal raves taking drugs way before any of you!
“We're pioneers. We were naughty. We were fun. We were outrageous. And then we had kids, we settled down. We were good people for 18 years, and then [when your kids reached 18] you're thinking ‘right! Let's go again!’”
Who are the cast for series two?
With that lovely quote from Davina in mind, lets meet the new cast of OG ravers. In a similar way to Love Island, these aren’t your average people - the contestants are all a walking masterclass on how to look good at 50.
This year’s cast includes Christian and his son Lucas, David and daughter Tiana, Maria and daughter Livia, Andy and daughter Issy, Clare and daughter Aimee, Vicky and daughter Angharad, Jenny and son Malachi, and Danny and son Ellis.
Just as with last year, they have pretty devastating stories, and Davina promises they will have you laughing one moment and crying the next. She also promises seeing kids watch their parents flirt will never get boring – and there’s “plenty” of that on the way!
What’s different for series two?
In series one, neither the parents nor their kids knew what was going to happen. The parents were told they were being watched by a team of relationship experts who would be choosing who they’d go on dates with and influencing decisions. Little did they know it was their own children.
In series two that jig is up. The parents and their kids are fully aware of what’s happening, but Davina promises this doesn’t mean the series is about to get boring. In news she’s not quite sure she’s allowed to share; she tells the audience at ITV about 'the snug' – a room the parents can go into for some time away from their housemates. In a twist, the parents have been allowed a button to switch off transmission to their kids… which begs the question, is it worse knowing or imagining?
The kids are also now allowed to pass notes to their parents when they’re on dates, so they don’t have to deal with radio silence from their son or daughter. Sometimes these are used to cheer them on, and sometimes manipulate.
Why does Davina think you should watch it?
If you want a reality dating show with a bit of soul, this might be for you: “We like to call it a relationship show instead of a dating show. We’re also watching the relationships between parent and child, because obviously […] the parents know that their kids are watching.
“It creates a really nice trust between the parent and child.”
Davina reveals that before filming each series she lays out pictures of the contestants, writes a few details about them, then plays matchmaker and puts them in an envelope. “[I’ve got] every single one wrong,” she laughs.
When will My Mum Your Dad series two come out?
My Mum Your Dad has no release date currently set, but will air on ITV1 and ITVX in Autumn 2024.
