What does the job involve?
Basically, the job is finding brilliant writers and working with them on their ideas; then, once we find the right broadcaster, working with the commissioner and the writer to create the series.
All production companies work differently and some have either development or production script editors, but, at Quay Street, I work across both, so I get to stay with the writer from the very beginning of the idea all the way through production and post.
What is your role during the development stage?
The name and nature of Harris’ character has not yet been revealed, but on Instagram, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has called him “the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced.”
In the first-look photo, provided by the BBC, Harris is seen to be wearing an old fashioned apron with a pair of pliers among the tools in its front pockets.
When the Bafta TV Awards took place in London at the beginning of May, amid the sea of famous faces on the Southbank’s red carpet, all eyes were on one young man – Ncuti Gatwa, announced a few hours earlier as the new Doctor in Doctor Who.
Currently wowing audiences across the globe with her performance as Elle Argent in Netflix's hit series Heartstopper, Finney will join Doctor Who as Rose. Billie Piper’s character Rose Tyler quickly became a fan favourite when she starred alongside 9th and 10th Doctors Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant when Doctor Who was rebooted back in 2005.
David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to their well-loved roles for the first time since the Doctor and Donna parted ways in ‘Journey’s End’ in 2008, when the Doctor had to wipe Donna’s memory in order to save her life. With the Doctor leaving Donna’s family with the stark warning that if she were ever to remember him, she would die, the question arises as to what brings the pair back together?
Ncuti Gatwa is best known for playing the hilarious Eric Effiong in Sex Education and won the Comedy Performance – Male award at the 2020 RTS Programme Awards.
Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the 14th doctor and will be the first black actor to play the role.
Russell T Davies will return to act as showrunner for the next series, which will no longer be produced in house by the BBC, but by Bad Wolf Productions.
The longest running sci-fi show, Doctor Who first aired in 1963 and follows the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor who travels through space in a TARDIS and helps people in need.
Over the years there have been 13 different actors portraying the Doctor, all with their own unique take, here are some of the most notable.
Davies will return in time for the 60th Anniversary of the sci-fi series in 2023, and continue writing for series beyond.
From his relaunch of the show in 2005 to his departure in 2009, Davies is widely credited with turning the British drama into a global icon.
Davies said: “I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show. But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm - I’m still a viewer for now.”
What does the job involve?
I’m part of a production’s creative team. After reading the script, I pitch my ideas for locations to the writer, producer and director, bringing my knowledge of what an area can offer. Ideally, I like to start as early as possible to have the greatest creative influence – with Little Door’s recent drama for BBC One The Pact, I was involved three months before shooting began.
