Casting has been announced for new BBC coming-of-age drama The Dream Lands, based on the novel Dreamland by Rosa Rankin-Gee, and adapted by Kayleigh Llewellyn, creator of RTS award-winning series In My Skin.

Pascale Kann (September Says) plays main character Chance, a 17-year-old who is as smart as she is fierce.

In late 2030s Margate, inequality, temperatures and sea levels are all soaring, and the political landscape is just as tumultuous. Chance has had to turn to crime to provide for her family, but a government rejuvenation scheme promises to breathe new life into her town. When Chance falls for the much-more privileged Franky, though, she learns that not everything is as it seems.

Also appearing are Clara Rugaard (Black Mirror) as Franky, Katherine Parkinson (Rivals) as Antonia and Connor Swindells (SAS Rogue Heroes) as Kole. Anna Friel (Marcella) has been cast as Jas, Golda Rosheuvel (Bridgerton) as Iona, Jacob Greenway (The Watchers) as JD and Tareq Al-Jeddal (Maternal) as Nye. Rounding out the cast are Scarlett Rayner (Trying) as Stevie, Ruby Bridle (Casualty) as Nugget and Raphael Sowole (Apartment 7A) as Trevor.

“I’m completely awed by this stellar ensemble, all brought together under the expert eye of our casting director, Rachel Sheridan,” said writer and executive producer Kayleigh Llewellyn. “We feel incredibly lucky to be working with a cast that blends new young talent, who I believe are the stars of tomorrow, and acclaimed actors, who will be delving into areas we’ve never seen them explore before… I’m thrilled to see this world being brought to life by such a phenomenal cast and our visionary directors, Erika Calmeyer and Myriam Raja.”
