Tom Davis and Romesh Ranganathan are back with a new boisterous comedy, and Springwatch presenters Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan head to Jordan for some stargazing.

King Gary 

BBC One, 9.30pm

BBC One’s loud comedy, King Gary, is written by Tom Davis and directed by James De Frond (Successville). Davis plays social climber Gary, who plans a large summer BBQ, hoping to emerge from his father’s shadow. Chaos ensues.

Davis is joined by Laura Checkley, who stars as his clueless wife Terriand Romesh Ranganathan, who plays Stuart, Gary’s neighbour and rival.

 

Chris and Michaela: under the Christmas Sky

BBC Two, 9.00pm

Springwatch double act Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan head on a trip to discover the best of the night sky. The pair start in Jordan, where they develop a theory that the three wise men were not in fact following the north star, but a conjunction of two bright planets in the night sky.

They also head to Norway in the hopes of finally experiencing the magnificence of the Northern Lights.

 

Funny Girl: the Musical

Sky Arts, 8.00pm

 

Sheridan Smith stars in the West End hit Funny Girl, playing Fanny Brice, a Broadway star in the interwar years. Based on the 1960s musical of the same name, this revival was filmed when it played in the Manchester Palace Theatre in 2017.

The musical follows Fanny Brice’s rollercoaster life and her rise to fame, from burlesque and vaudeville to a booming career in show business.
