"Part-investigation, part-peek-behind the scenes, yet wholly hilarious," a new W channel series will see comedian Katherine Ryan investigate a range of extreme parenting techniques.
Ryan is reuniting with producer Expectation for the series after Backstage with Katherine Ryan, which let viewers in on her backstage banter with fellow stand-ups at their live shows. She says that, following its success, "I've been hoping to work with Expectation on another unique 'all access' project.
"Parental Guidance gives plenty of food for thought while putting comedy front and centre."
Ryan will invite viewers into her own home to see how she juggles motherhood with the intense lifestyle of being one of the country's leading stand-ups. Already potty training at eight months and co-sleeping, Ryan and her husband Bobby Kootstra's own parenting methods are not exactly conventional.
But, according to the synopsis, that's nothing compared to the parents she'll be meeting in the series, who have come up with extreme methods to deal with some of the universal issues facing children today. Ryan will have to judge whether she might improve her own family life.
Kirsty Hanson, commissioning editor at W, commissioned the series. She described it as a "real Motherland", Sharon Horgan's comedy of middle class motherhood manners, "but with privileged access and genuine revelation seen through the searingly honest comedic lens of Katherine Ryan."
Katherine Ryan: Parental Guidance (working title) will air on W and UKTV Play in 2024.
