UKTV has commissioned its first true crime series for W, Red Flag.
The eight-episode programme will detail the exploits of digital manipulators, using first-person testimony from the people they targeted. Catfishing, gaslighting and deception all take centre-stage, as the show explores the darker side of dating sites and online messaging.
Produced by First Look TV, the hour-long programme delves into several of the tools used by manipulators, from love bombing to mirroring to breadcrumbing.
“We can all too easily find ourselves scammed, blackmailed and even hoodwinked into sex by those who hide behind fake identities or who prey on our instincts to help others in need,” First Look executive producer Will Hanrahan said. “It will make for compelling viewing – and we hope it prevents such crimes happening to you or someone you know.”
“Those affected will be at the forefront,” said Emile Nawagamuwa, commissioning executive at UKTV. “This is a chance to tell their story and send messages of caution and solidarity to others who may be living the same experience.”
“This is such an important commission for our 2024 slate,” added Adam Collings, channel director for W, “and I’m so pleased we get to share the survivors’ stories and try to signpost the hallmarks of deception for others.”
Red Flag will air on W and be available on streaming service UKTV Play in 2024.
