ITV has released a trailer and first-look images for upcoming four-part comedy-drama Douglas Is Cancelled, starring Hugh Bonneville (Paddington) and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).
The eponymous Douglas (Bonneville) is an esteemed news presenter who finds himself in the middle of a social media storm after telling an off-colour joke at a wedding.
“It was sexist, not misogynist!” an exasperated Douglas insists in the trailer.
Though initially on good terms with co-anchor Madeline (Gillan), Douglas’s wife Sheila (Alex Kingston) warns him that his colleague isn’t always to be trusted.
As Douglas continues to be the subject, rather than reader of the news, his relationship with Madeline starts to sour.
Rounding out the cast are Simon Russell Beale (The Death of Stalin), Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso), Ben Miles (Andor) and Madeleine Power.
The show is written and created by Steven Moffat, best known for his tenure as the showrunner on Doctor Who. He recently returned to pen an episode of the latest series – helmed by Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) as the 15th Doctor – entitled Boom.
Douglas Is Cancelled will air later in June on ITV1 and ITVX.
