The BBC has revealed the prominent LGBT figures to whom Tom Allen (Bake Off: The Professionals) will be speaking as part of one-off programme Big Gay Wedding.
The show will see the comedian spare no expense in putting together the dream wedding for one lucky same-sex couple. The event will mark not just the union of Adam and Dan, but also 10 years of gay marriage being legal in England and Wales.
Along the way, Allen will hear from longstanding activist Peter Tatchell and broadcaster and Women’s Equality Party co-founder Sandi Toksvig (QI). Lynn Sutcliffe and Sarah Hews, who made headlines in 1992 for presenting themselves at Westminster Registry Office to be married – both in wedding dresses – will also make an appearance.
Allen will also speak to Angela Eagle, the MP who helped to introduce civil partnerships in 2004, and Lynne Featherstone, who sits in the House of Lords. Featherstone, a Liberal Democrat, was the originator of the landmark marriage equality legislation that was passed in 2013 and came into effect in 2014.
David Cameron, who was Prime Minister when the law was passed, will also appear in Big Gay Wedding.
“There have been times where, as a gay man, I have wondered, ‘Well why do we need to be equal like this, when we can be... better?’,” said Allen, “but with something like marriage, it’s a ritual that dates back thousands of years and so in being allowed to take part in it in the eyes of society and in the eyes of the law means more than just ‘a wedding’. It's a much more profound symbol – a statement that we, as gay people, are actually equal to others, worthy of relationships and deserving of the same rights as everyone else.”
