Sky has released a glimpse at its epic new series Britannia

The dark and complex world of Britannia is shown in the new images and first-look trailer released by the broadcaster.

Britannia is a Sky Original Production by written multi-award-winning script writer Jez Butterworth, who has written extensively for the stage (The Ferryman, Jerusalem) and whose film writing credits include Black MassEdge of Tomorrow, and Spectre.

The drama is set in 43AD, and follows the Roman army as they return to crush the heart of Britannia, a land led by warrior women and powerful Druids. The series tells of the emotional and physical power struggle between three tribes: the Druids, Celts and Romans, who are all battling for the heart of Britannia.

The new images reveal that Mackenzie Crook (Detectorists) has joined Kelly Reilly (True Detective) and David Morissey (The Missing) in the cast. Crook plays Veran, the leader of the Druids, who is feared yet respected; he answers to no one but himself and the gods.

Other new additions to the series are Nikolaj Lie Kaas (The Killing), who plays Divis and Zoë Wanamaker (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) as Celtic Queen Antedia.

Britannia will be available on Sky Atlantic in early 2018.
