For the first time, a pay-TV show is premiering on YouTube before it is shown on television, BT has confirmed.

The show, originally aired on AMC in America and is, in part, based on the true story of two ships, HMS Terror and HMS Erebus, which became trapped in the icy Northwest passage whilst mapping the Arctic coastline in the 19th Century. The series also draws inspiration from Dan Simmons' 2007 best-selling novel of the same name. It combines the real-life drama of being stuck in treacherous conditions with a sinister supernatural element.

With Ridley Scott as Executive producer and featuring an all-star cast of mainly British faces, including Tobias Menzies (Outlander), Kieran Hinds (Game of Thrones) and Jared Harris (The Crown), expect more than your average period drama.

Alluding to its famous historical protagonist, Tony Singh, Content Director at BT TV said, "Just like Sir John Franklin, BT likes to break new ground and we are delighted to partner with our friends at YouTube to take the first episode of The Terror to everyone in the UK.”

The first episode of The Terror will be available on YouTube from 0:01am for 24 hours on Tuesday 24 April.
