Created by comedian Aisling Bea, the first series of the dramedy followed the whip-smart teacher Aine (Bea) in her attempts to get herself back on track after a nervous breakdown, with the help of her sister Shona, played by Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe).
The series, produced by Merman, will see Bea and Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) reunite as the Irish sisters Aine and Shona.
Picking up from the events of the series finale, This Way Up will continue to explore the tense will-they-won’t-they dynamic between Aine and Richard, played by Tobias Menzies (The Crown). Since Aine tutors Richard’s son Etienne, the employer-employee relationship between the pair will either halt their burgeoning romance or make it all the more passionate.
A panel-show stalwart, Bea has crafted a successful career on the comedy circuit, becoming a familiar favourite on shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown, Taskmaster and Live at the Apollo.
With This Way Up, Bea finds her signature voice in the world of TV’s scripted comedy. A triple threat as the writer, executive producer and star of the series, Bea has taken less of a cautious first step, and more a running leap into the creative medium.
