When it emerged that BritBox was rebooting Spitting Image, the ITV show that ran for 18 series from 1984 to 1996 and which mercilessly lampooned the Thatcher-Reagan era, there was scepticism that the revival would work.
Could a collection of latex puppets that had helped redefine TV satire in the pre-digital age be successfully reinvented to send up today’s politicians and celebs?
The creative team behind Spitting Image discuss reviving the show for modern audiences and reveal the latest football stars to become puppets following the success of Euro 2020.
It is hard to think of another great BBC sitcom blessed by such a strong pedigree as that of Blackadder. Running over four series, spanning 1983 to 1989 – plus the occasional special – the creators and stars of this comic masterpiece read like a roll call of late-20th-century British screen talent.
The first of two new series, starting in autumn this year, will be lampooning the likes of Boris Johnson, Harry & Meghan, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Co-creator Roger Law will head the creative team once again, having previously established the original series.
“The new Spitting Image will be global through a uniquely British eye, it will be more outrageous, audacious and salacious than the previous incarnation,” said Law.
