Co-written and directed by Michael Winterbottom (Greed), This England explores Johnson’s attempts to juggle Brexit and his own controversial personal and political life while the country faced its biggest crisis in modern history.

Formerly titled This Sceptered Isle, the five-part series retraces the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.

Kenneth Branagh stars as Boris Johnson, who famously grappled with all of the pandemic, Brexit and his controversial personal and political life during his first months in office.

The events in government are interspersed with stories from the experts and scientists racing against the clock to understand the virus, the frontline workers bravely attempting to contain it and the ordinary people whose lives were upended.

Written by filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People) and Kieron Quirke (Cuckoo), the five-part series will chart the first wave of the pandemic.

Tracing the UK government’s response, This Sceptred Isle will explore the impact the global pandemic had on Britain, and the man charged with leading the country through it.
