Award-winning playwright and writer James Graham (Quiz) has written a six-part crime drama set in post-industrial Nottinghamshire entitled Sherwood.

Set in the mining village where Graham grew up, the contemporary series will follow a fractured community rocked by two shocking murders.

Inspired by real events, the rife suspicion around the tragic murders threatens to aggravate historic divisions that have existed between families since the Miners’ Strike in the 80s.

In order to catch the killer, police inspector Ian Sr Clair and Met officer Kevin Salisbury must help the village overcome conflicts stretching back to 1984. As more is discovered about the increasingly broken community, questions arise as to whether people truly are who they say they are.

James Graham commented: "It means the world to have this opportunity to bring the voices of a community I grew up in to BBC One. So much is spoken about the divisions and difficulties in these 'Red Wall' towns, but they're not always understood. I feel so honoured to be able to tell a fictionalised story about a very real trauma, but with the humour and heart and resilience of the people I know and love there."

Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross, executive producers for House Productions, added: “James has written an extraordinarily powerful drama, which has immense heart, wit and humanity - and, as ever with his writing, it’s a pertinent piece for our times.”

Filming on Sherwood will begin in Nottinghamshire later in 2021.
