Amazon have unveiled a series of new shows as part of its Pilot Season
The Season is a chance for Amazon users to offer feedback and respond to new shows before the are commissioned for a full series.
According to Amazon’s Roy Price, the company are “focused on bringing customers compelling, must-see TV and we accomplish this by going directly to them for input.”
He added, "Our process has proven to work time and time again. their feedback has helped create series that have become fan favourites among critics and customers."
This is part of a growing trend among VOD platforms towards commissioning full series based on audience feedback. Channel 4's Comedy Blaps work in a similar way.
The new Pilot Season includes an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon, and a new show by BAFTA-winning director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Four Weddings and a Funeral), the season is a chance for users to help select the next big show to be made available to Prime members.
Amazon also announced six major children’s shows which boast a star-studded line-up of voice artists including Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road), while David Arquette will appear in Amazon’s one new live action kids’ show, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.
Frasier’s Kelsey Grammer joins Matt Bomer (White Collar) star in The Last Tycoon. Bomer plays Hollywood’s Golden Boy who is locked in a bitter rivalry with his boss (Grammer) for the studio.
Actress Lily Collins (Abduction) also stars in the drama which explores the highly wrought passions and ambitions of the early days of Hollywood.
Amazon’s other new drama is The Interestings, starring Lauren Ambrose (Torchwood). The show follows a gang of varyingly talented teenagers, tested by secrets, lies and tragedy.
The pilots are all scheduled to debut on 17 June only on Amazon Video in the UK, USA, Germany and in Japan, where viewers will be invited to comment on the shows.
