Sky has announced another epic series in its roster of original drama for 2016/17

Britannia is a big-budget drama set in 43AD as the Roman Imperial Army returns to crush the wild heartlands of Britannia, where the wild Celtic warriors and druids hold sway over the population.

The series stars Kelly Reilly (True Detective), David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Zoë Wannamaker (Harry Potter) and Stanley Weber (Outlander).

The 10-part series is being written by multi-award-winning writer Jez Butterworth – the writer of Jerusalem and Spectre among others – and joins Sky’s packed roster of original programming for 2016/17.

The series is a co-production between Sky and Amazon video – the first such partnership between the two – and will be shown on Sky 1 in the UK. The series will be available on Amazon Prime Video in 2017.

Writer Jez Butterworth described the show, saying “I’m fascinated in what happens when gods die. When an entire ancient faith stalls, topples, collapses – and a whole new pantheon grows in its place.”

“Here we have a war between two pantheons – the Roman gods v the Celtic gods. It’s the Heavyweight Clash of All Time. And we see it all from a human perspective, of individual survival, ambition, courage, lust, loss, revenge. All the stuff the gods have always loved us humans for the most!”
