Ahead of tonight's appeal show - now hosted by Dermot O'Leary - here's our list of the best things to catch on Children in Need

1. A brand new Star Wars sketch

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is out in December, but if you can't wait until then, there'll be an exclusive sketch tonight. R2-D2 and C-3PO will be joined by Warwick Davis (who played the Ewok Wicket in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) and Lord Sugar as they "attempt to find a worthy winner to help trigger the first BBC Children in Need totaliser of the night."

2. Scott Mills abseils down the ArcelorMittal Orbit

The Radio 1 DJ and former Strictly contestant professes to be scared of heights, but that hasn't stopped him from taking on the formidable feat of abseiling down the Blackpool Tower, live on TV. Storm Abigail has precluded that plan though, and BBC bosses have called it off and announced that he will instead be descending from the top of the Olympic Park's ArcelorMittal Orbit. The last-minute change sure to have set his nerves on edge, it should be an entertaining - if uncomfortable - watch.

3. The cast of EastEnders will perform a number from Top Hat

As is something of a tradition for BBC charity appeals, some of the cast of its most popular soap will be performing a musical dance number from Top Hat, live. Those taking part include Gillian Taylforth, Lorna Fitzgerald, Shona McGarty and Tameka Empson, in what promises to be a must-see for fans of the show. Or the musical. Or, possibly, of people making fools of themselves (in the name of charity).

4. Call the Midwife does Strictly Come Dancing

Another Children in Need tradition, as the cast of a major drama take on one of its reality formats, and tonight it's the turn of the Call the Midwife stars to take to the dancefloor. One of their own - Helen George - is already proving a success on the real Saturday night show, but will any of them give her a run for her money?

5. Star-studded performances

Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, Jess Glynne (with this year's official Children in Need single Take Me Home), Rod Stewart, and Peter Andre are all set to perform. Oh, and the much-anticipated duet of Westlife's Shane Filan and Girls Aloud's Nadine Coyle, with their single I Could Be for the first time.
