Apple TV+ has announced an adaptation of The Essex Serpent starring Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes.
Based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Perry, the six-part drama is set in the Victorian times.
Cora (Claire Danes) is newly widowed and ready for a fresh start after being released from her abusive marriage due to the death of her husband. She finds herself drawn to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, after hearing about a local superstition regarding a mythical sea dragon known as the Essex Serpent.
As rumours surrounding the creature begin to spread, trusted and rational community leader Will (Tom Hiddleston) tries to reduce any hysteria from taking hold. However, when tragedy occurs, the locals turn on Cora and accuse her of attracting the creature.
The rest of the cast includes Frank Dillane, who will play Luke, a bright, young surgeon who finds an intellectual match in Cora, and Hayley Squires plays Cora’s closest confidante and companion Martha, an intelligent young socialist.
Clémence Poésy stars as Stella Ransome, Will’s wife, a friendly and sympathetic woman who becomes close friends with Cora, and Jamael Westman plays Dr George Spencer, Luke’s right-hand man and talented and kindhearted surgeon.
The series has been adapted for the screen by Anna Symon and directed by Clio Barnard.
The first two episodes of The Essex Serpent will air on Apple TV+ on 13 May 2022.
