Bestselling author Candice Carty-Williams’ debut drama Champion has received new artwork, an extended trailer and a release date.
The new trailer shows rapper Bosco Champion (Top Boy's Malcolm Kamulete) return from prison and go back to his music career. Supporting him as he builds back his reputation is his sister Vita (Déja J Bowens in her television debut), whose dedication and lyrics are secretly behind her industry dominating brother’s success.
When Vita is discovered by Bosco’s musical competition and begins recording and releasing her own music, she soon becomes a performer in her own right. Her rising popularity causes a sibling rivalry that threatens to tear the Champion family apart. As Vita says in the trailer, challenging Bosco, “it’s champion vs champion now, so get ready”.
Also making her television debut is music artist Ray BLK, who supplied original music for the series alongside Ghetts, Shola Ama, M1llionz, Toddla T, and MNEK, with more to be announced.
Nadine Marshall (Sherwood) and Ray Fearon (His Dark Materials) complete the Champion family as parents Aria and Beres. Also featuring is Jo Martin (Doctor Who) as Bosco’s manager, Kerim Hassan (Once Upon a Time in London), Adeyinka Akinrinade (Top Boy), Tom Forbes (Wolf Hall), Genesis Lynea (Shadow and Bone), Karl Collins (Hollyoaks), Francis Lovehall (Death on the Nile), Corey Weekes (Coronation Street), and Rachel Adedeji (Dreaming Whilst Black).
Champion premieres at 9.15pm on BBC One on Saturday 1 July 2023, and the entire boxset will be made available on iPlayer immediately after.
