Critically-acclaimed Cold War thriller Deutschland83 will return to Channel 4's digital hub All 4
Titled Deutschland86, the second series picks up the story of Communist agent Martin Rauch who we last saw in East Germany, caught up in a betrayal plot amongst his superior officers.
Three years later, in 1986, Martin emerges as an exile in East Africa and is once again enlisted by his Aunt Lenora to fight in the Global Cold War. Set amongst true stories of terrorism in 1980s Western Europe, Deutschland86 journeys through events in Paris, Johannesburg, and Tripoli before returning to a divided Berlin where nationwide anxieties are coming to a head.
Deutschland83 became the highest rated foreign language drama launch in the UK when it premiered in January 2016. It was the flagship series for All 4's foreign language service, Walter Presents, curated by London-based Italian producer Walter Iuzzolino who hand-selected over 700 hours of programming to feature in the international stream.
“When you stop thinking about foreign drama as a very narrow prism – a certain type of landscape, a certain kind of female cop – then the world is your oyster.” Said Iuzzolino in an interview last year.
Of the Deutschland86 purchase, the TV connoisseur said: "We are proud be the UK home of this extraordinary blockbuster series. Deutschland83 marked a defining moment in the history of subtitled drama, becoming a cultural phenomenon and a much loved title for millions of British fans."
Shooting of the sequel will begin next year.
