In February we're holding our third Careers Fair, where employers from across the television industry will be on hand to discuss training and job options. Ahead of the our 2017 unique event, Rhys Cartwright, kit room assistant and driver at Pro Motion Manchester, told us how he got his current job thanks to the 2015 Careers Fair

I found out about the RTS Futures Career's Fair on Twitter, and thought that even though travelling from Manchester to London for it specifically might be extreme, you never know who you'll meet at these events. I found everyone at the fair to be very friendly, and had no issues striking up conversations with other visitors; after all, we were all in the same boat. In my mind I had plans to talk to the production companies, as well as BBC, ITV and Channel 4; there was such a huge diversity in exhibitors I just ended up talking to everyone.

It may have been my background in rental that drew me to the Pro Motion Hire stand, and they had such a great selection of kit on show and seemed so friendly and engaging that I ended up talking with Alain for some time.I explained that I was looking for work in the industry but I was based up in Manchester, so it was a long shot coming down but I'd enjoyed the day regardless. Alain, however, knew otherwise and prompted me to check out the Pro Motion Twitter feed on Thursday that week for a "big announcement". He couldn't tell me what, but I was intrigued.

When I logged on to Twitter on Thursday, Pro Motion had announced a new Manchester branch. And that, I suppose, was that! Six months of helping out and freelancing later, I was interviewed and offered a full time position.

Pro Motion's Technical Director Alain Lolliot, who was on the company's stand at last year's fair added:

We had a great time at the RTS Careers Fair last year. The attendees were really interested and seemed to be soaking up what we had to offer them.

Rhys came up and introduced himself to us as he was interested in the camera side of the industry. He was very keen and switched on and through a shrewd bit of networking and after quite a lot of ad hoc work for us, he later became Pro Motion Manchester's first employee!
