ITV commissions new crime thriller DI Ray starring Parminder Nagra.
Written and created by Maya Sondhi, the four-part drama is set in Birmingham and focuses on Leicester born Detective Inspector Rachita Ray.
When DI Ray takes on a tricky case, she is forced to confront a lifelong battle between her British identity and South Asian heritage.
Ray earns a long waited for promotion when she is asked to join a homicide investigation.
However, she only finds out on her first day that the murder is a ‘culturally specific homicide’, which makes her worried that she is only a ‘token appointment’ assigned to the case due to her ethnicity, not her ability.
Despite this Ray is determined to find the killer and call out the biases of her colleagues, neither of which are easy.
The murder becomes more complex as it starts to involve delving into the world of organised crime.
Ray starts to find long buried feelings brought to the surface, including a personal identity crisis and the sad truth that as an Indian woman she had to work twice as hard as everyone else.
Parminder Nagra commented: “I am so looking forward to getting back to the UK after such a challenging time globally to be part of this exciting new project.
“Written by Maya Sondhi and exec produced by the force that is Jed Mercurio, we are being helmed by an amazing team to bring something special to our story telling landscape.”
DI Ray will film in the Midlands during autumn 2021.
