Captain Tom Moore

RTS East: The story of Captain Tom Moore

Captain Tom Moore

In April, Haworth was the first TV journalist to interview Captain Tom Moore, the World War Two veteran who walked around his garden to raise money for the NHS.

“We were right at the beginning of the lockdown and there was really grim news coming out about the virus,” she recalled. “At Anglia, we’re always trying to find good news stories to lift the audience’s spirits – [Captain Tom] was just perfect.

“It’s really draining reporting on the pandemic because you’re living and breathing it, so it was really nice to have [a positive story] to report.”

Captain Tom, a former British Army Officer, recently completed 100 laps of his garden using his walking frame in aid of pandemic relief, raising more than £28 million for NHS Charities Together.

As one of the million Allied troops that took part in the Burma campaign, Captain Tom will be sharing memories of his service to ensure his fellow forgotten heroes are remembered on the day.

Having undertaken officer training in 1940 at age 20, Captain Tom first served in India before reaching Burma to recapture the colony.
