ITV has announced that Aidan Turner (Poldark) will lead the new psychological thriller The Suspect.
Adapted by Peter Berry (Gangs of London) from Michael Robotham’s novel of the same name, Turner will star as Dr. Joseph O’Loughlin, a man who appears to have a perfect life with his devoted wife, loving daughter, a successful practice as a clinical psychologist and a new publishing deal. With a burgeoning media profile, the doctor even became a hero online after rescuing a young patient from jumping from the tenth floor of the hospital.
When veteran police officer DI Vincent Ruiz and his young partner DS Riya Devi are assigned to an investigation involving a young woman found dead in a shallow grave in a West London cemetery, Doctor Joe is consulted to offer his clinical expertise. Yet as the investigation gathers pace, his enthusiasm for the case begins to arouse suspicion. Has Joe’s work as a clinical psychologist allowed him to develop a criminal mindset? Or worse?
Produced by the team behind Vigil, Line of Duty and The Pembrokeshire Murders, the five-part series will also star RTS-Award winner Shaun Parkes (Small Axe), Sian Clifford (Fleabag), Camilla Beeput (Save Me Too), Adam James (Vigil) and Anjli Mohindra (Bodyguard).
Aidan Turner commented: “I am thrilled to be taking on the complex and demanding role of Joseph O’Loughlin, a man with so much to give but so much to lose, and a hidden darker side.”
Peter Berry added: “Bringing The Suspect to the screen has been a fantastic and fascinating journey. I hope the audience will find it equally enthralling as they delve the depths of a truly iconic character caught up in a story that will test his faith in his profession, his family and himself.”
The Suspect will commence filming in autumn 2021.
