The eight-part series will follow 25-year-old Queenie Jenkins, a Jamaican British straddler of both cultures, a South London stalwart, journalist, loyal friend, not so loyal daughter, occasional mess and an undervalued success.

Working at a national newspaper, where she’s frequently forced to compare herself to her white, middle-class peers, and having recently gone through a tough breakup with her long-term white boyfriend Tom, Queenie begins looking for comfort in all the wrong places, with all the wrong people.

Surrounded by her closest friends, known affectionately as her “Corgis”, the brilliantly straight-talking Kyazike, Darcy and Cassandra, Queenie finds herself bouncing from one regrettable decision to another as she aims to discover who she wants to be.

Exploring heartbreaks and bad dates, Queenie is at its core a story about a young black woman’s value and the unrelenting rollercoaster of life. An ode to South London and the gentrification that’s grinding it down, Queenie explores race, identity, culture and the politics that shape you. Celebrating the love between friends and the chaos of family and community, the series will follow Queenie on her journey to discover her own self-worth through rebuilding her relationship with herself.

Candice Carty-Williams said: “Being able to bring Queenie, her family, and of course the Corgis to the screen, is so exciting to me. And to do that with Channel 4, who has always set the tone for what television is about by pushing the boundaries of what we watch, is an added bonus.

To adapt and breathe new life into a story that has been talked about across the globe, and to bring Queenie, our problematic fave, to a whole new audience, is such a privilege.”
