The BBC has confirmed the cast for Greg Davies’ brand new comedy series The Cleaner.
Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown) and David Mitchell (Upstart Crow) will star alongside Stephanie Cole (Still Open All Hours) Donald Sumpter (Game of Thrones) and Shobu Kapoor (Four Weddings And A Funeral) in the upcoming series for BBC One.
They will be joined by Ruth Madeley (Years and Years), Layton Williams (Everyone’s Talking About Jamie musical), Zita Sattar (Casualty), Georgie Glen (The Crown), Bill Skinner (Ted Lasso) and Esmonde Cole (Still So Awkward).
Written by and starring Greg Davies, The Cleaner follows a state-certified cleaning technician, Paul ‘Wicky’ Wickstead, who has the gruesome role of scrubbing away any signs of death as a crime scene cleaner.
While out on duty, Wicky meets a host of eccentric and peculiar characters, and enjoys a good old gossip with whoever he comes across, whether that’s the victim’s relatives, neighbours, employers, or even the murderer themselves…
The six-part series is based on the award-winning German comedy series Der Tatortreiniger (Crime Scene Cleaner) created by Ingrid Lausund.
Greg Davies said: “I’m thrilled that this remarkable collection of actors has agreed to appear next to me on screen. Scrubbing up blood in a hazmat suit in front of them will be a pleasure.”
Shane Allen, Commissioning Controller for BBC Comedy added: “Pinched myself when I saw all this comedy and acting royalty in one show. It’s all down to Greg’s well hewn scripts which take us in to different character worlds in surprising and funny ways each week, as Wicky has a transformative effect on those he comes across. The Cleaner delivers on BBC One’s unique commitment to make UK comedy for a mainstream audience."
The Cleaner is due to air in late 2021.
