“It’s official!” said James Corden in an Instagram post. “We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey.”
The former host of The Late Late Show has confirmed that the finale of the beloved BBC sitcom will air on BBC One on Christmas Day in 2024.
The post also confirmed that Corden has written the special with co-creator Ruth Jones, who also plays the other half of his relationship in the show, Nessa.
Fans will be hoping for proper closure after the last Christmas special (2019) ended on a huge cliff-hanger when Nessa proposed to Smithy (Corden).
They’ll also get to check in on their on-screen son Noel Edmond Smith, aka “Neil the Baby.”
Smithy’s best mate and fellow Essex boy Gavin (Mathew Horne) is expected to return, alongside his Welsh partner and Nessa’s best friend Stacey (Joanna Page).
Stacey’s uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon), and Gavin’s parents Pamela and Mick (Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb), should also appear, as well as Stacey's mother Gwen (Melanie Walters).
The announcement puts paid to the speculation first reported by Deadline in February 2024, which said that a new episode was on its way, starring most of the original cast.
This was after Corden told the RTS Cambridge Convention in 2023, in an exclusive interview upon his return from America: “I don’t know if we’ll ever do another one.”
Although, he did add: “Ruth and I would love to make something together again.”
He also reckoned that there was “something really perfect” about the ambiguity of the last special’s ending. Plus, after more than 19 million tuned into watch Nessa propose to Smithy, he wondered: “can we truly fulfil people’s expectations for it? I don’t know.”
