The BBC has confirmed that the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards will take place in 2020.
Broadcast live from Media City in Salford, the show will not only celebrate the year’s greatest sporting moments but will also pay homage to the ordinary people and Unsung Heroes using the power of sport to sustain the nation through unprecedented times.
Despite several iconic events in the sporting calendar being cancelled or postponed, 2020 was still a year to remember for many.
The Premier League, Champions League, the cricket, rugby and Formula 1 seasons, tennis Grand Slams and golf majors, the Tour de France and London Marathon are just a few events that went ahead and kept fans on the edge of their seats.
BBC SPOTY 2020 will champion the teams that triumphed and the stars who succeeded, even with all the interruptions to their training schedules.
Director of Sport, Barbara Slater, said: “As we know, it has been a strange and unprecedented year, but we have still been fortunate enough to see plenty of sporting highlights which we look forward to honouring on the night.
“The sixty-seventh BBC Sports Personality of the Year award promises to be another exciting and tough choice for audiences.”
Nominations for the BBC Unsung Hero awards 2020 are now open. Find out more about the awards here.
BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020 will air on BBC One on 20 December.
