Classic 90s game show Gladiators will continue to run in the Walsh family, as Bradley and Barney Walsh have been confirmed to host the show’s reboot.
All members of the Walsh family have a longstanding relationship with Gladiators. Barney grew up on the set of the original series, watching his mum Donna Derby choreograph the Gladiators cheerleaders, and even taking some of his first steps on the arena floor. Bradley (The Chase) stepped up to compete in a Celebrities vs Jockeys special in 1997.
Following the same format as the eight seasons that ran until 2001, each episode will see four contestants, two female and two male, battling it out against one of the Gladiators. A Gladiator usually takes the form of a very muscly member of the public, with quite an aggressive nickname. Past examples include Siren, Falcon, Diesel and Rhino.
Competitors who earn the most points in these challenges receive a head start in the Eliminator assault course, with the winner going on to compete in the next round. Successful competitors will fight to win a variety of prizes in the Grand Finale at the end of the series. Viewers can expect to see some new challenges alongside the traditional fan favourites such as Duel, Hang Tough, and the Eliminator.
Bradley says: “Wow! I can’t believe that I’ve been asked to be part of this iconic show. I used to sit backstage, or in the audience, every week watching my wife be part of this juggernaut and now I get to co-host a new version of Gladiators! Saturday night family entertainment at its best... ARE YOU READY?”
Barney says: “Gladiators has been a massive part of our family and it’s an honour to be asked to co-host this iconic show. I’m so excited for everyone to see the spectacle, elite athletes and fantastic family entertainment that is Gladiators.”
Gladiators will run for 11 episodes and will be returning to BBC One and iPlayer later in 2023.
