A researcher is the next step up from the role of runner in the editorial production line and the job role varies depending on the project. The main role of a researcher is what it says on the tin: research.

Duties include

  • Sourcing and researching information needed for the programme, this could be anything from looking up locations to facts about the subject matter
  • Fact checking and conducting background checks on contributors
  • Data wrangling
  • Conducting interviews
  • Writing and editing
  • Developing and generating ideas for the project
  • Archive research
  • Booking resources, freelance staff and transport
  • General administrative jobs
  • Finding and interviewing contributors for the programme

Skills needed

  • The ability to generate and develop new ideas
  • Strong editorial and research skills
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Close attention to detail
  • The ability to precisely fact-check
  • Able to work well as a team
  • Able to work well in pressured environments
