A first-look trailer for The Young Pope, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino and starring Jude Law, has been released ahead of its world premiere at the 73rd Venice Film Festival

The 10-part series, a collaboration between Sky, HBO and French network Canal+, will be broadcast on Sky Atlantic in Italy, Germany, Austria, Great Britain and France from late October.

Jude Law plays the fictional Lenny Belardo, also known as Pius XIII, the first American Pope in history.

The series also follows the other leaders of the Catholic Church who have chosen to devote their lives to serving the great mystery of God. The character of Pius XIII will be ruthless and stubborn towards Vatican advisers, but emotionally sensitive deep down.

Director Paolo Sorrentino has previously said the series is about: “The inner struggle between the huge responsibility of the Head of the Catholic Church and the miseries of the simple man.”

Law is joined by an international cast including Diane Keaton (Sister Mary), Silvio Orlando (Cardinal Voiello), Scott Shepherd (Cardinal Dussolier), Cécile de France (Sofia) and James Cromwell (Cardinal Michael Spencer).

The series starts on Thursday 27th October in in the UK and Ireland.
