This week, Dave Gorman, Abbott Elementary and Bergerac all make their return to screens. Elsewhere, a production crew wreaks havoc in a small Irish border town, and a scandal brews in Corby.

Dave Gorman’s Modern Life is Goodish

Monday

U&Dave, 9.00pm

Comedian and professional chequered shirt ambassador Dave Gorman returns for a sixth series skewering contemporary living. It’s been seven years since the show’s last outing, which should give the comic plenty to talk about.

As always, his PowerPoints take no prisoners. Across three episodes, Gorman will be discussing magicians, AI and big tech. He’s also set himself the small challenge of reinventing the alphabet.

Abbott Elementary

Wednesday

Disney+

Alright, settle down: class is about to start, and it’s your own time you’re wasting.

Willard R. Abbott Elementary School opens its doors for a fourth series. Expect an HR investigation that goes horribly wrong for principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James, Tuca & Bertie) and a flood of new arrivals from the nearby construction of a golf course. There’s also a reliably unhinged crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Toxic Town

Thursday

Netflix

Jodie Whittaker (Time), Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education) and Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) star in this drama written by Jack Thorne.

The English town of Corby is promised a new lease of life with the redevelopment of a decommissioned steelworks. Then birth defects start appearing in newborns.

What follows is a long campaign for justice, as a group of mothers set out to prove that the toxic waste bussed through their area is to blame.

Small Town, Big Story

Thursday

Sky Max, 9.00pm

Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon) star in this comedy-drama about a Hollywood production that gatecrashes a village on the Irish border.

Local doctor Séamus Proctor (Considine) isn’t so much starstruck as horrified when he discovers TV bigshot Wendy Patterson (Hendricks) is involved. Decades ago, the two had a fling that ended in an extraterrestrial close encounter, which Wendy is now determined to expose. Also, birds keep falling out the sky. That’s showbiz baby?

Bergerac

Thursday

U&Drama, 9.00pm

Return to Jersey for the Toby Whithouse-penned revamp of the 1980s detective show.

This time round, Damien Molony (Being Human) plays the eponymous sleuth. Like in the old series, Bergerac has an unconventional approach to solving crimes, and an iconic 1940s Triumph Roadster to boot. Unlike in the old series, he suffers from a drinking problem. Trying to rebuild after the death of his wife, Bergerac will need to prove that he can still function as a detective and father.
