Stephen

ITV, 9.00pm

Steve Coogan stars in this sequel to the landmark 1999 drama, The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, which picks up the case in 2006.

Six years on from the public inquiry which branded the Met Police institutionally racist, and 18 years after the murder, the case hasn’t progressed despite the Lawrences knowing the identity of the killers.

It is left up to Doreen (Sharlene Whyte), Neville (Hugh Quarshie) and DCI Clive Driscoll (Coogan) to lead a new investigation and secure the convictions of the racially motivated murderers.

Back To Life

Tuesday

BBC One, 10.35pm

The first series of Laura Solon and Daisy Haggard’s Fleabag-esque tragicomedy, Back to Life, saw thirty-something ex-con Miri (Haggard) adjusting to life after lockup, only to be served some bombshells come the finale.

It turned out that her pre-prison best friend Mandy (Christine Bottomley) had never come to visit because she was the one who’d been having an affair with her other former friend Lara’s (Imogen Gurney) father and blamed it on Miri. The betrayal arguably makes her responsible for Lara’s accidental death, coming as it did during her and Miri’s confrontation.

Then there was her discovery of her mother Caroline’s (Geraldine James) affair with her childhood boyfriend Dom, who had given both her and her husband an STD.

How she deals with these revelations only series two will tell.

Code 404

Wednesday

Sky One, 10.00pm

Buddy cops Carver (Stephen Graham) and Major (Daniel Mays) are back in action for series two of Sky’s sci-fi procedural comedy Code 404.

Having cracked The Juggler case in the finale, Major established himself as the top cop in the Special Investigation Unit, but his personal life was left in tatters. Upon his return from work, he discovered that his wife Kelly (Anna Maxwell Martin) was cheating on him with the one man he thought he could trust: his partner in justice, Carver.

In the new series, the dust has far from settled, but when a 20-year-old investigation is reopened, the pair is forced to reunite.

Grand Designs

Wednesday

Channel 4, 9pm

Channel 4’s mainstay property show is back for another series of ambitious homebuilding projects. Kevin McCloud returns to present and visits a couple in south Devon for the first episode.

Joe and Claire’s plans for their new home, resembling a huge sculpture inspired by the local landscape, sound both complicated and expensive. And sure enough, the problems soon arise, with the budget doubling once the first walls go up.

Live International Football: Hungary vs England

Thursday

ITV, 7.15pm

Dry your eyes, for England are back in action for the first time since they were denied an ending to 55 years of hurt in that agonising Euro 2020 final.

Gareth Southgate’s side currently sits at the top of Group I after three wins, scoring nine goals and conceding just the one. But Hungary are breathing down their necks, in second place by only two points, and so could prove their toughest opponents yet. Especially away from home in front of a full Puskas Arena.
