ITV has released a gallery of images of Stephen, the new three-part sequel to The Murder of Stephen Lawrence.
Sharlene Whyte (Small Axe) and Hugh Quarshie (Breeders) star as Stephen Lawrence’s parents, Doreen and Neville.
Steve Coogan (Philomena) plays DCI Clive Driscoll, the detective who led the investigation into the murder of their son Stephen.
The sequel picks up the case in 2006, 13 years after Stephen’s death on the night of 22 April 1993 in a racially motivated attack at a bus stop in Well Hall Road, Eltham.
The Lawrences knew the identity of their son’s killers, but when the authorities failed to convict those responsible, they were forced to launch their own campaign for justice.
This campaign eventually led to a historic public inquiry which found the Metropolitan Police to be institutionally racist and transformed law practices and the UK’s understanding of racial inequality.
Six years on from the Inquiry and 18 years after the murder, the case hadn’t progressed, but thanks to the efforts of the Lawrences and DCI Driscoll, a new investigation finally convicts two of the guilty gang.
Alrick Riley (The Cops) directed the series, which was written by Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions).
Paul Greengrass, the writer and director of The Murder of Stephen Lawrence executive produced the series alongside Mark Redhead, Jimmy Mulville and the creator of Line of Duty, Jed Mercurio.
Stephen will air on ITV later this year.
